Responding to a recent report suggesting food prices have risen by over 10% in the past year, debt management company Gregory Pennington (www.gregorypennington.com) have advised consumers to take active care of their finances, and to seek debt help if outgoings become unmanageable.
The report by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) showed that the sharp rises in wholesale costs in the past year have been passed on to consumers, with fresh produce price rises surging as high as 11.9% between August 2007 and 2008.
Many analysts have suggested that this was the reason behind the Bank of England’s decision to hold interest rates at 5 per cent for the fifth consecutive month – where previously a drop was expected to help stabilise the economy – in a bid to avoid a recession.
A Gregory Pennington spokesperson commented that this decision spells further uncertainty for the economy. “The Bank of England are in a tricky situation: raising interest rates would help to bring down inflation, but it could be extremely damaging to the housing market. Likewise, lowering interest rates would help the housing market, but could mean inflation rises further.
“The Bank of England have been hoping that inflation will come down naturally – possibly due to a fall in oil prices – in which case they could safely lower interest rates. But as things stand, any change in interest rates could damage the economy in one way or another, so the safe option is to leave rates as they are.”
The spokesperson went on to explain that problems with rising inflation, particularly food prices, look set to continue – even once the Bank of England change their base rate. “Since interest rates are expected to fall, inflation may well continue for some time, since there will be less incentive to save,” she said. “The thinking behind it is that lower interest rates will kick-start the housing and credit markets, which some economists believe is the underlying cause of instability in the economy. Once that is rectified, inflation may begin to slow.
“But food prices are heavily affected by external factors, such as prices in the country of origin – so even if overall inflation begins to slow, we may see food prices continue to rise for some time yet.”
The Gregory Pennington spokesperson advised consumers to continue taking preventative measures to minimise the impact of rising food prices. “Compromise is key. People should consider what their essential costs are, and budget accordingly. Then consider saving as much as possible of what is left over.
“There is an ongoing danger that as prices get higher, more and more people will see their disposable income diminished, and in some cases, outgoings may begin to exceed their income. If it gets to that point, it’s time to seek debt help from a professional debt adviser.
“There are a number of debt solutions available that could help to reduce monthly payments for people in need of help with debt. A debt management plan or debt consolidation loan, for example, can allow monthly payments to be rescheduled over a longer period of time than the original debts, making each payment smaller,” he said. “But be aware that this could result in paying more interest in the long run.”

It’s a given that art tastes differ widely and, in general, we choose artwork that evokes pleasant memories or experiences. Therefore it’s logical that, unless you’re collecting art as an investment, you should buy what appeals to you and here you can’t go far wrong with art prints.
Art prints not only come in a huge range of choices, but they’re also the most affordable. Here we’re referring to art prints as reproductions of original artwork.
With an art reproduction, the original is scanned at very high resolution. From the scan, copies are produced using a variety of different printing methods such as off-set printing or high quality inkjet printing.
An “original print” on the other hand is not a copy of an existing work. Instead, the artist begins the creative process by planning a work that can be created a number of times from an image made initially on a printing surface such as a metal plate, wood, or stone.
Because each print is usually hand-made by the artist, the number produced is typically quite small. Each print is then signed by the artist and given a number to indicate the size of the edition. This is the origin of “limited edition” prints and these can take the form of etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, and linocuts.
The net result is that an original print will cost a lot more than an art reproduction. Although modern artworks are also sometimes produced as limited edition prints, the size of the editions is much bigger, often numbering in the hundreds, as the prints can be machine produced.
In most cases though art reproductions are “open edition” – in other words, there’s no limit on the number that can be printed and more can always be made to meet demand.
For the buyer, the advantage of open edition prints is that prices can be kept low, while the artwork is also available in a variety of sizes and a choice of surfaces.

The American man of science, Ben Franklin, who persevered both nearsightedness as well as presbyopia, devised bifocal reading glasses in 1784 to obviate having to frequently switch between two pairs of glasses.
The original lenses for repairing astigmia were manufactured by the British astronomer George Airy within 1825.
Along the history of bifocals, the building of spectacle frames also developed. Early on oculars were contrived to be either held in place with hand or by maintaining force on the nose. Girolamo Savonarola advised that oculars could be held in place with a ribbon passed over the subject’s head, this in turn fastened by the weight of a hat.
Entering modern bifocal history, the contemporary fashion of bifocal eyeglasses supported by temples passing over the ears, was produced in 1727 by the British lens maker Edward Scarlett. These designs were not at once prosperous, however, and assorted styles with attached handles like “scissors-glasses” and lorgnettes stayed fashionable throughout the eighteenth and into the early nineteenth century.
In the early 20th century, Moritz von Rohr at Zeiss made the Zeiss Punktal spherical point-focus lens system which dominated the eyeglass lens domain for many years.
Despite the rising fame of contacts and laser restorative eye surgery, eyeglasses remain quite popular, as their engineering has continued to improve. For example, it’s currently possible to buy frames constituted of special memory metal alloys that return to their correct configuration after being bent. Other frames have spring-loaded hinges.
Glasses have come a long way, haven’t they? In fact, today you can even buy sunglasses with bifocal lenses.
