Float Switches

Float switches are very useful devices, their function is to indicate the liquid level in a reservoir by putting into action an alarm, an indicator or something else. There are many types of float switches: from sophisticated series of optical sensors indicating when the liquid reaches different levels to the simple commonly used floats that raise a rod which actuates a micro swit.

For example, a float switch is useful when having a lower quality sump whi chch runs constantly and there is the danger to get burned because of the evaporation of the water; in this case it is profitable to get a float switch because its price is far smaller than the one of a new pump. The switch can alert an alarm or switch off the liquid source which is being pumped.

It is important where the float switch is placed: it should be mounted at a considerable distance from the fill wave so that the water/ liquid turbulence does not affect the normal functioning of the switch and it is the best, if a delay timer (which is not supplied) is also used.

The way a float switch works is rather simply: after the it is connected and has the cable fixed on the side of the tank, the float switch sits on the water/liquid horizontally and when the liquid level decreases, it changes its position to vertical, but just before it reaches the vertically position, the switch operates and stops the pump. After the liquid reaches its normal level again, the float switch gets to its initial position and lets the pump function further on.

There have also to be taken measures in order to prevent the switch form getting wet and that is possible by making the necessary connections in an enclosure which suits this operation. The way float switches are connected is very simple: in series with the supply to the pump.

If you think about saving some extra money, consider the float switches as a good option to do it because in this way the pump you own will be at minimal risks to get damaged (burned). Nevertheless, before buying a float switch, it is suggested making a detailed research in order to find the best one for your need at the most convenient price.
